For the average consumer, used clothing has a lifespan of 5.4 years, which is half as long as it was for a consumer 15 years ago (Source: UN Environment Programme). Worldwide, 85% of clothes end up in landfills or get burned, and the situation is even worse in Singapore, where the figure stands at 92%. Every week, 15 million used garments from recycling bins and donation centres all over the world end up in Ghana. This employs most of the city of Accra, for the sorting and resale of these clothes. A lot of the clothes are sweat stained, torn and have to be thrown. 6 million garments are added to Accra's landfills every week. Similar recounts have been made in Kenya, Chile etc.
